Blizzard ponders WoW mobile opportunities

Blizzard plans to investigate interaction between World of Warcraft and mobile phone and has spoken hypothetically about potential results.

"...we're going to have to look at ways to use the mobile device to enhance their [players] World of Warcraft experience. We'll see what kind of applications we can come up with", Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce has told MTV about a new mobile endeavour by the developer.

According to Pearce, there's only a "couple of people" currently involved with the endeavour right now, and it's unlikely it'll ever progress into actual development of full mobile phone games.

However, Blizzard's obviously already kicking around ideas on what it could mean for World of Warcraft.

"...whether we're going to be able to do this, I don't know, but it would be really cool - is if we could have a client on your mobile device like that that hooks you into your guild chat in the game. That would be really cool", Pearce mused.

"Or the ability to view your in-game mail or view your in-game auctions. We probably wouldn't allow you to actually buy or sell via the mobile device, but you could certainly monitor."

He explained that, in order to allow WoW players to buy and sell in the auction house via mobile phone, Blizzard would want them to be logged in.

"We would have to look at our infrastructure and see if that would have a notable impact on the experience", Pearce continued.

"There's a lot of considerations we'd have to look at".
